This wont do squat to ween the US off foreign oil or give any relief for a long time.

    not true at all

our refineries arent close to capacity right now and from the time we start drilling we could start producing oil almost immediately

the issue is getting more refineries built and online as quick as possible

I agree we do need to get more refineries built. Take for instance Hurricane Ike causing all of this mass hysteria, and outages in certain areas. We need to have that issue address for the future.

Drilling will not solve the problem entirely, but its another angle you have to take to ensure that we are doing all we can. It will ease the price of oil somewhat with us just taking steps to do this IMO. It will help some but like I've said many times before...we have to cover all angles to address this issue. It would suck 10 years from now to look back and say, well we could have did this, we could have did that. Why not do all we can?

Offshore drilling needs to be done, but its only part of the answer to the huge question "How do we lower prices and not be so dependent on foreign oil"?. The refineries that you are talking about will take awhile to get up, after all that the US will still be suffering with the prices.

According to the Energy Information Administration, if Congress lifted the moratorium on offshore drilling, by 2030, oil crude production in the "lower-48? outer continental shelf will increase by about 200,000 barrels per day. Really do you think thats going to help that much? No, its a step but one of many.

We're not really "dependant" on foreign oil, the foreign oil is dependant on us buying it to keep there economies going. We have enough oil available and still in the ground to serve our needs for a long long time.

Time frame doesn't really matter, though I disagree with you. We must begin, so let's begin now.

Bubble has burst. If this follows the same pattern as the last 3 or 4 times, we all should be happy to get fuel for 4 bucks a gallon now and OPEC will sell us all we want at that price. The oil companies can handle this amount without any investment and make more money. So nothing changes, again, but the price of oil.
Yep, I'm with you, let's start somewhere. Pass a law-drill a well, convert coal to gasoline. Anything. A single step begins the journey of a thousand miles.

One thing about it, if the US economy goes, the rest of the world's economies go with it. Oil will be affordable again..lol
...And if you ain't down with that, I got 2 words for ya....

The global economy is "built" around foreign oil and how much OPEC can "squeeze" the U.S. They don't want the United States to drill because that will just reduce their viselike grip on our balls.
